Carolina Panthers start Baker Mayfield against Cleveland Browns in Week 1.

Baker Mayfield says this isn't his "redemption year," but he'll start for Carolina against the Browns.

Mayfield will start Sept. 11 against the Cleveland Browns, who traded for Deshaun Watson.

""There's a lot of attachment," Mayfield said of the Browns. "I'm not a robot who will declare it has no meaning.

Watson is suspended for 11 games, thus Mayfield will face Jacoby Brissett.

"Mayfield indicated he won't prepare for the opening. "I'm a competitor once I step inside the lines.

Mayfield beat Sam Darnold in a competition, but league insiders said the job was his to lose.

Baker has made a lot of progress in all three categories in a short period.

Darnold acknowledged it was "difficult" to be a backup for the first time since college, but he wants to be an NFL starter.

Last week, Mayfield indicated he wasn't anxious about when the decision will be made.

"He responded, "It's no redemption year." "I'm capable. No one needs convincing.

Carolina hopes to obtain the 2020 version of Mayfield, who went 11-5 and won a playoff game for the Browns.

The 2017 Heisman Trophy winner went 6-8 with 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions despite a shoulder ailment.

Mayfield didn't promise he could lead Carolina to the playoffs, but he noted the Browns were 1-15 and 0-16 before he arrived.

Looking ahead, we won't have any expectations or the like," Mayfield declared.
